Voter ID

Everyone voting at a polling station must have an accepted form of photographic voter ID. This could be ID such as your passport or driving licence.

What voter ID do I need?

A full list of acceptable forms of voter ID is on your poll card. Alternatively, use the link below.

Please note that only a national bus pass can be used as voter ID and not a locally-issued bus pass. The Mayoral booklet will offer more information about this.

How to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate

If you don’t have an accepted form of voter ID you can apply for a free voter ID document known as a Voter Authority Certificate. You only need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate if:

  • you do not have accepted photo ID
  • you no longer look like the photo on your ID
  • the name on your photo ID is different to your name on the electoral register

Before you apply online you will need:

  • a recent, digital photo of yourself
  • your National Insurance (NI) number
  • a birth certificate, bank statement or utility bill if you do not know you NI number

Apply online for a Voter Authority Certificate via GOV.UK

Alternatively, contact your local election office and they will send you a paper copy of the Voter Authority Certificate application form.

All online and paper applications must be received by the Returning Officer by 5pm on Wednesday 24th April 2024. Please apply as early as possible to ensure you receive your certificate in plenty of time.
